I am an abstract landscape artist. For the last thirty years, I have produced paintings using acrylics or pastels. I have also produced my own limited edition silkscreen prints making the stencils and doing the printing myself. Much of my recent work is depiction of nighttime scenes that are familiar to everyone: shoppers, illuminated store windows, headlights and neon signs around strip malls. By emphasizing what I find interesting (the halos and glare around lights or the mysteries hiding deep within certain shadows) and eliminating what I find boring (poles, wires, car details, the actual words on signs), I seek to portray what it is like to drive down the nighttime streets of twenty-first century America. I am interested in capturing some of the spiritual impact of urban as well as rural landscapes. STUDIO Prior to retiring to Bella Vista, Arkansas, my studio/home was a rehabbed loft located in the West Loop area of Chicago. Now in contrast, I am enjoying the serenity of the woods and landscape of Northwest Arkansas. Here I paint, frame, and live with my wife Janet. EDUCATION I have an undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago. I worked on an advanced degree in Art History at the same University and studied in Europe on fellowship for a summer. My interest in art has been long-standing. My father was a commercial artist who did his renderings in pastels. As a young boy, I played with his pastels and drawing tools. That started me on my career. In grade school, I dominated the art world by winning the art contest three times in a row. I am embarrassed to admit that many of the tree indications found in my fourth grade artwork also can be found in my current work. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES After serving two years in the Army during the Viet Nam war, I became a graphic designer. My wife encouraged me to become a full time artist and pursue my dream, which I did. During my art career, I have served as the treasurer of the Midwest Pastel Society and as a juror and board member of the Wilmette Arts Guild. During the last twenty-five years, I have personally maintained gallery representation in New York, Chicago and in many other cities. In addition, agents and publishers of my limited edition serigraphs have sold hundreds of my prints to galleries and collectors nationwide. Since moving to Arkansas, I have become involved with the Artists of Northwest Arkansas, The Ozark Pastel Society and the Village Art Club in Bella Vista. In 2006, I taught my first pastel painting class for the Village art Club and enjoyed it immensely. I hope to continue to teach. PURCHASERS OF MY ARTWORK Some corporations that have acquired my artwork for their permanent collections include A.C. Nielsen, AT&T, BP (Amoco Oil Company), Ford Motor Company, General Motors, IBM, J. Walter Thompson Advertising, Marshall Fields, McDonalds, and Playboy. In addition, William Pei and Associates, architects selected a suite of my limited edition prints for installation in a hotel they designed in Canberra, Australia. JURIED EXHIBITIONS AND ONE-MAN SHOWS During the last twenty-five years, I have been juried into many national exhibitions and one-man shows. My juried exhibitions in 2001 were The One of a Kind Show in December at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago and a group show at the Chicago Athenaeum, in Schaumburg, Illinois, Spring, 2001, of artwork selected by jury to be in the survey book, Art Scene Chicago 2000 by Ivy Sundell. I was a signature member of the Midwest Pastel Society when a Society having this name was located in the Chicago area. Since moving to Arkansas in 2003, I have had one-man shows in the Julie Wait Design Gallery, Rogers, Arkansas and the Keyes Gallery, Springfield, Missouri. I have also been juried into various local exhibitions, such as the MOAK 4 Sate Regional Show held at the Springfield Art Museum, Springfield, Missouri. Most recently, I am represented by the Saferis Gallery, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. |
